Before administering the suspension to pediatrics, ensure to shake it vigorously before use. You can also mix it with milk, baby formula, or juice. But it is best to use the measuring device provided by the manufacturer to administer the correct dose. 

While chewable tablets must be chewed before swallowing, the regular ones should be swallowed whole with an adequate amount of water.

Amoxicillin Dosing Information 

Amoxicillin dosage is based on your doctor's assessment of how severe the infection is and your weight or age. There is also a dose modification for people with renal impairment. However, we will provide a general dosage guide for this drug.

Dosage for Treatment of Infections of the Ear, Throat, Nose, Skin, and Genitourinary Tract 

The usual adult dose for mild to moderate infection is 500 milligrams every twelve hours or 250 milligrams every eight hours for 72 hours. However, the adult dose for severe infection is 500 mg every 8 hours for at least 5 days.

In children > 3 years, the dosage for mild to moderate infection is 25 mg/kg every twelve hours or 20 mg/kg every eight hours daily in divided doses. 

The dosage for severe infection in children > 3 years is either 45 mg/kg every twelve hours or 40 mg/kg every eight hours daily in divided doses.

Dosage for Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infection 

The dosage in adults and children is 500 milligrams every eight hours and 40 mg/kg every eight hours in divided doses respectively. 

Dosage for H. pylori Treatment 

In conjunction with clarithromycin and lansoprazole, 1 gram of Amoxicillin is administered every 12 hours for 14 days. 

Dosage for Chlamydia

You should ingest 500 millgrams of Amoxicillin tablets every eight hours for seven days.


Before using this drug, inform your doctor if you have allergies to penicillin or Cephalosporins. Also inform your doctor if you have any history of:

  • Infectious mononucleosis
  • Kidney impairment
  • Diarrhea due to antibiotics use
  • Recent typhoid vaccination
  • Hormonal birth control pills

Do well to let your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant. Amoxicillin can be excreted into the breast milk, inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding before taking it.

Side Effects of Amoxicillin

The common side effects associated with use of this drug are: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or rashes. However, you may need to inform your doctor if you experience signs such as: 

  • difficulty breathing
  • hives
  • severe skin reactions
  • fever
  • skin discoloration 
  • burning eyes  
  • swelling in your throat or face
  • severe stomach pain

  • Oral thrush
  • Vaginal yeast infections

  • Symptoms of liver impairment

Missed Doses and Overdose

Do not attempt to take more than the recommended dose if you have missed a dose. It may result in an overdose, which could become toxic to your body.
