Oral Health
Our new Oral Health Program allows us to deliver exceptional dental care as we foster integration with our medical, behavioral health and preventive health programs.
Promoting Preventive Oral Health for All
Our dental clinic is dedicated to providing care that emphasizes prevention, maintenance, and the treatment of oral disease. Oral health is essential to the well-being of all individuals, and it is especially critical for people living with HIV (PLWH). Poor
oral health can undermine HIV treatment outcomes and significantly reduce quality of life. At Corktown, we are committed to shifting the mindset away from accepting poor oral health and tooth loss as the norm by prioritizing preventive care and promoting long-term
oral health.

Oral Health Education and Instruction
Oral health education and instruction empower patients to take control of their dental care. Dental professionals provide guidance on proper brushing and flossing techniques, the impact of diet on oral health, and the importance of regular check-ups. Tailored advice is offered based on individual needs, including information on managing specific conditions like diabetes. By educating patients about oral hygiene practices and preventive measures, dental professionals help promote better oral health outcomes and overall well-being.
Oral Examinations
Oral examinations are thorough assessments of a patient's oral health conducted by dental professionals. During these exams, dentists check for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and other abnormalities. The process includes visual inspections, probing, and X-rays to evaluate teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues. Oral examinations also involve screenings for oral cancer and assessments of existing dental work. Regular exams are essential for early detection of issues, allowing for timely treatment and maintaining optimal oral health.
Preventative Screening
Preventative screening involves comprehensive evaluations to identify potential oral health issues before they escalate. Dentists conduct visual examinations, take X-rays, and assess risk factors for conditions like tooth decay and gum disease. Early detection through screenings allows for timely intervention, reducing the need for extensive treatments later. Regular screenings are crucial for maintaining optimal oral health and overall well-being, as they help prevent serious dental problems and promote a proactive approach to dental care.
Cavity Fillings
Cavity fillings are a common dental procedure used to treat tooth decay. The process involves removing the decayed portion of a tooth and filling the cavity with a restorative material. Various filling materials are available, including amalgam, composite resin, glass ionomer, gold, and ceramic. The choice of material depends on factors like location and patient preference. Fillings restore the tooth's function and appearance, preventing further decay and maintaining oral health. Regular dental visits can help prevent the need for fillings.
Cleanings
Dental cleanings, or prophylaxis, are essential for maintaining oral health. Performed by dental hygienists or dentists, cleanings involve the removal of plaque, tartar, and stains from teeth. The process includes scaling, polishing, and flossing to ensure thorough cleaning. Cleanings also provide an opportunity for dental professionals to assess gum health and identify potential issues early. Regular cleanings help prevent cavities and gum disease, contributing to a healthier smile and overall well-being. Most people should schedule cleanings every six months.
Periodontal Treatment
Periodontal treatment addresses gum disease, which affects the tissues supporting the teeth. Treatment options vary based on the severity of the condition and may include non-surgical methods like scaling and root planing to remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line. Surgical options, such as flap surgery and bone grafts, may be necessary for advanced cases. The goal of periodontal treatment is to restore gum health, prevent tooth loss, and promote overall oral health through regular maintenance and care.
Tooth Removal
Tooth removal, or extraction, is a dental procedure used to eliminate teeth that are severely decayed, damaged, or impacted. The process begins with a thorough examination and X-rays to determine the best approach. Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area, ensuring patient comfort. There are two types of extractions: simple and surgical. After removal, proper aftercare is essential to promote healing and prevent complications. Tooth removal may necessitate replacement options, such as implants or dentures, to maintain oral function.
Tooth Whitening
Tooth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure aimed at lightening the color of teeth and removing stains. Various methods are available, including in-office treatments using high-concentration peroxide gels and at-home whitening kits with lower concentrations. Professional whitening is the most effective and safest option, often providing immediate results. Whitening treatments can enhance the appearance of a smile and boost self-confidence. However, it’s essential to consult a dentist to determine the best whitening method for individual needs.
Emergency Dental Care
Emergency dental care addresses urgent dental issues requiring immediate attention, such as severe toothaches, broken teeth, or dental trauma. Patients experiencing pain, swelling, or injury should seek prompt treatment to prevent further complications. Emergency dental services may include procedures like tooth extractions, root canals, or repairs to damaged teeth. Dentists prioritize pain relief and stabilization of the condition. Having access to emergency dental care ensures that patients receive timely assistance, preserving oral health and preventing more severe issues.
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are a preventive treatment designed to protect teeth from decay, particularly in children and adolescents. Sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of molars, where cavities often form. The application process is quick and painless; the tooth is cleaned, and the sealant is painted on and hardened with a special light. Sealants act as a barrier against plaque and food particles, significantly reducing the risk of cavities. Regular dental check-ups ensure that sealants remain intact and effective.
